This is a delightfully humorous Christmas story about a woman who becomes a victim of her own strategies to extract presents from the people of the little town of Carthage. The writing style is generally tongue-in-cheek, and the eccentricities of the characters are vividly portrayed. The interactions between Mr. and Mrs. Budlong are especially humorous, as are the descriptions of of polite society. This is a good Christmas read.
I WAS VERY BUSY DURING THE HOLIDAYS. I DID NOT READ IT YET. I WILL PROBABLY READ IT OVER THE SUMMER. LOVE CHRISTMAS ALL YEAR!
I liked up until the end. I didn't like the way it just abruptly ended. I would have liked to see what the final outcome of that Christmas was like. Maybe it was there and I missed it.
This is a story that people need to remember at Christmas-time. So often it is all about giving gifts for "show." It should be enjoyed as a special time, but ends up being a pretty big chore list.
As a crafter in my younger days, I could readily imagine Mrs. Budlong's work room and her different projects through the years. I can also relate to the joys and stresses of gift giving and receiving. What I found disappointing was the end of the story. I wanted her to find some insight into the true meaning of Christmas and the giving of gifts. Sadly, that understanding was lacking.
This is a story about a woman who gave presents to get presents and it did not end up as she had hoped it would. It is funny and interesting to see how things evolve and her solution to resolve her dilemma.
